Our Story
We're Floris, Alejandra, Max, and Lucas, and we're Family Gone Fishing, though we didn't actually go fishing. We're on a one-year dream trip around the world!
Floris is originally from the Netherlands, Alejandra from Colombia. We met on Christmas Eve in 2011 and have been together ever since. We got married in 2016, and then Max and Lucas came along and turned everything upside down in the best way.
In 2019, we went on our first sabbatical together. Floris was out of steam with his graphic design studio, Alejandra was ready to leave her COO role at a startup accelerator, and with 1,5-year-old Max we set off for seven months across Indonesia, Australia, Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and Argentina.
It was, as cliché as it sounds, a life-changing experience. Alejandra's goodbye to the corporate world became permanent, and she built her own practice as a life coach, breathwork facilitator, and human design reader. Floris never went back to running a studio either. Instead he combined his love for creation and quizzes into The Quiz Channel and The Quiz Show on YouTube, and is currently spending most of his time on art and music.
In the summer of 2023 we moved from the Netherlands to MedellÃn, Colombia, a change we have absolutely loved. But we also knew from the start our time here would be finite. And as we started thinking about what comes next, and with another trip around the world on the planning in pencil, we realised the timing was too perfect to ignore. Max turns 9 this summer, Lucas turns 5. They are curious and wide-eyed and at an age where the world can really get into them. In a few years the window narrows with school, friendships, sportsclubs and so on. If we're going to do this, the time is now.
So here we are, about to set off on a 365-day trip across more than 20 countries! This is where we will document our year around the world. Welcome to Family Gone Fishing!
